The cities are listed here in order of decreasing population in 2020: Aomori (275,340), Hachinohe (223,529), Hirosaki (168,564), Towada, (60,420), Mutsu (54,122), Goshogawara (51,435), Misawa (39,181), Kuroishi (31,972) Tsugaru (30,979), Hirakawa, (30,621).

Aomori Prefecture is located in the northernmost part of Honshu, the largest of the islands that make up Japan. In the south, it borders Akita and Iwate prefecture; in the west, it is flanked by the Sea of Japan; in the east, it is bordered by the Pacific Ocean; and in the north, it faces the Tsugaru Strait. Also in the north is Mutsu Bay, which has many cities lining its coast like Mutsu and Aomori City. The South center of the Aomori prefecture is dominated by the Towada-Hachimantai National park, which contains the Hakkoda mountain range, Lake Towada, and many hot springs and onsen.

There are many tourist spots in Aomori Prefecture, such as the temples that dot the city of Aomori, as well as spectacular natural sites like Lake Towada or Fear Mountain on the Shimokita Hanto peninsula.
