Cities and population

Greater Tokyo Area

This region is home to many large cities including the capital city of Japan, Tokyo. The Greater Tokyo area, which includes Tokyo and parts of Kanagawa, Saitama, Chiba, Ibaraki, Tochigi, Gunma and even Yamanashi prefectures, is the world’s largest metropolitan area and contains over 37 million people. The Greater Tokyo area is loosely defined and even the Japanese government uses several different delineations. The loosely-defined concept isn’t popular among local Japanese citizens that see Tokyo and it’s many suburbs as distinct and separate cities. Just the city of Tokyo itself contains over 9 million people spread out in its 23 special wards.

Cities of Kantō

Notable cities include the capitals of the prefectures: Maebashi in Gunma, Utsunomiya in Tochigi, Mito in Ibaraki, Saitama in Saitama, Chiba in Chiba, Yokohama in Kanagawa and Tokyo in Tokyo. The largest cities by population are Tokyo, Yokohama, Kawasaki and Saitama with each having 9.6, 3.7, 1.5, and 1.3 million people, respectively.

Greater Tokyo and More

Kantō takes many of the different things that make Japan great and squeezes them into one loosely-defined boundary. While the Greater Tokyo Area provides the largest metropolis in the world, beautiful lakes, mountains, farms, beaches and castle cities can be found in the other parts of the Kantō region. Kantō truly has something for everybody.
